Pancake Tuesday--February 16th

In the United Kingdom and Ireland, Shrove Tuesday is often known as Pancake Day or Pancake Tuesday. In the UK and for those who follow the Anglican tradition elsewhere it is known as Pancake Day; in Ireland and other countries following the Catholic tradition it is known as Pancake Tuesday.

A traditional pancake is slightly thicker than a French crêpe. It is served immediately after preparation. Long ago it was traditionally served with a meat-based stew (also a luxury then). 

Pancakes and doughnuts are associated with the day preceding Lent because they were a way to use up rich foodstuffs such as eggs, milk, and sugar, before the fasting season of the 40 days of Lent. 

Brian and I celebrated Pancake Tuesday with our own version--mixed berries, cream, and chocolate. The Irish typically like their pancakes with sugar and lemon juice.
